Proven Attributes of Successful Franchisees

It’s a question that is constantly asked and rarely answered: What does it take to be a successful franchisee?

Strictly examining personal traits, most might guess at two factors: hard work (tenacity, determination, innovation) and intelligence (education, experience).

If you guessed either of the above, you’re wrong. Sort of.

A 2012 report compiled by the Franchise Relationships Institute found that a strict regime of hard work combined with high levels of intelligence does not necessarily equate success, and may in fact hinder it.

The report was based on a survey of over 1800 Australian franchisees, each of which completed a lengthy questionnaire regarding almost every aspect of the operations and financials of their franchise, as well as their personal history.

Those franchisees who had pursued university degrees or postgraduate study prior to starting their business experienced diminished financial success in contrast to those who merely completed high school. The proposed explanation for this is that higher education encourages people to challenge accepted norms and outside propositions. This is an impediment to success as a franchisee, as the job description includes following operational procedures implemented on a company-wide level.

Interestingly, working ridiculous hours did not increase the financial success of franchises. Franchisees who worked up to 60 hours a week, on average, experienced the most financial success. Working longer than this actively reduced financial gains on average. The key appears to be systemising procedures.

Those who chose to implement time-saving procedures, and who outsourced difficult tasks, tended to work fewer hours while also enjoying an increased level of income.

Overall, the lesson from the report was this: There are no easily identifiable attributes that all successful franchisees have. However, one thing is certain. Behind every financially successful franchisee is a system that works.
